How To Use the Recording Function on the PS4

Since release there has been some confusion over use of the automatic game recording function built into the PlayStation 4.

According to the PlayStation 4 manual..

Video of the most recent 15 minutes of gameplay is continuously and automatically recorded.

This would make most people think that when they press the Share button the last minutes of gameplay footage will be there. What is true is that the PlayStation is constantly recording the last 15 minutes of gameplay BUT it’s not automatically saved. The method appears to have changed since the consoles release but, as of now, here’s what you need to do.

  • Once a great gaming moment has occurred – i.e. something you wish to share – press the Share button ONCE.
  • The current recording will be stopped and the Share menu will appear.
  • At the bottom of the screen the option “Save Video Clip” should appear (see image below – click image for a larger view).

  • Press SQUARE and the last bit of footage will be saved (up to 15 minutes, depending on how long since you last saved).

It’s done. You can now share this online or save to a USB device. But, importantly, you can do this in your own time as the recording will now be safely stored on your PS4.

If you wish to set a new start point for recording at any point simply press the Share button twice whilst playing – the existing recording will be abandoned (be careful therefore before doing this!) and a new one will be started. This is useful if you’re about to do something that you know you want to record.

One further thing to be aware of – if you press the Share button but then exit back to your game the recording will be lost.

Lastly, it’s worth nothing that the recording doesn’t always work – you press the Share button and the option to save the video clip doesn’t appear. I can only assume this is a bug. I do a lot of saving of games and it only occurs occasionally but it’s often the initial recording that doesn’t work. Double pressing SHARE when you first start a game appears to force initial recording to start appears to work.

Full details of the above process can be found in a PlayStation Knowledge Center article.
