There are a number of companies, particularly on crowd funding sites, producing all-singing all-dancing key ring accessories. Bluetooth connection, GPS tracking – whatever you can think of. What most have in common, though, is the ability to connect your phone to your computer in a simple, portable solution. Strip away all the extra and this is precisely what the Echo Connect does – it’s all it does but the price reflect this.
Made of a flexible silicon, it’s a Y shape with a hole in one of the arms (for placing on your keyring) and a USB socket on the bottom. The other arm is either a Micro USB or lightning connection, depending on which Connect you choose.
Being made of flexible it can be easily twisted into shape and, measuring just 5.5cm, it’s both portable and incredibly easy to connect device with. Putting it on your key ring can be tricky because of the softness of the rubber but can certainly be done.
Packaging is quite neat, although not particularly environmentally sound. A hard plastic box, with a magnetic catch holds the device within a foam insert. There are no instructions and the Echo Connect details, printed on a label on the bottom, is in such a small font that it’s nearly impossible to read.
Black versions are available from MobileFun for £12.99 (Micro USB version) and £19.99 (Lightning connector version). Black, red and blue versions are also available from Echo’s own online shop for £15 for either version.
It only has one function but it’s the one that most people want from a device such as this – and that singular purpose is reflected in the price. It costs more than a simple cable, but is always on hand when you need it. If nothing else, it’s a great stocking filler for Christmas.
