The Toshiba U401 is an all-metal USB memory stick, available in a range of memory capacities from 8 – 64GB, with prices from £5.09 to £13.99. They are USB 2 and as with my review for the U201, I don’t really get the advantage of not buying USB 3, as there is so little price advantage.

Speed, as with the U201, is a mixed bag. Read speeds are average, although in this case, small size random reads are actually quite fast. However, write speeds are not good at all, ranging from 0.004MB/s to 4.432MB/s.

Packaging is a small plastic blister inside a tearable cardboard container. Product details are printed on the back and on the inside of the cardboard.

The metal case is the saving grace here, as it looks and feel nice. But, even considering this is just USB 2, those write speeds are pretty poor. Read speeds, though, are above average. Personally, I’d look for some speedier, and not much more expensive, USB 3 eequivalents
