Some time ago, I detailed how to replace the hard drive in a mid-2012 Macbook Pro and, now, after 4.5 years of use, it’s time for the battery to be replaced.

Apart from the battery you’ll need 2 screwdrivers to do this – A Phillips #00 Screwdriver and a Y1 Tri-wing Screwdriver. Some kind of plastic “spudger” will be needed as well.

The battery I purchased from Amazon came with both the required screwdrivers and I had a spudger from a phone repair kit.

First of all, remove the ten screws from the bottom, using the Phillips #00 Screwdriver and ease off the bottom of the case. You’ll see the battery near to the rear of the case.

Use the spudger to unplug the battery connector.

Now, remove the two tri-wing screws (circled below).

Unpeel the sticker from the case (but don’t remove it from the battery itself).

Now you can use the black plastic ‘pull’ to lift the battery from the case.

Now insert your new battery and reverse the above process.

You will need to do an initial calibration of your new battery which consists of running it down 3 times, leaving it drained for a number of hours and then re-charging to full and leaving it charging for some time afterwards.
