Back in 2017, I revealed, after just a few months working and travelling for Automattic, what I carried with me in my backpack. Each year I’ve repeated this. Well, until 2020 when travel became a memory. Now, in 2023, with travel very much back, I’m ready to give an update.

iPhone vs iPhone Pro – Should I switch?
I had the fortune to be asked yesterday to take part in this week’s live recording of the PC Pro podcast, during which I reviewed the iPhone 13 Pro.
The conclusion – it’s a hot phone with relatively iterative updates, a lot of which I’m not bothered about. Essentially, if you have a recent iPhone, it’s probably not worth upgrading for most people.
It was during this that Jon Honeyball argued that these features aren’t meant for the masses, as that’s why this is a “Pro” phone – if those professional features aren’t something I need, why not buy the standard iPhone model?
And that got me thinking.
What’s in my bag? 2020 edition
Back in 2017, I revealed, after just a few months working and travelling for Automattic, what I carried with me in my backpack. 4 years on, and many more trips, and that content has changed.
As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, none of us have done much travelling lately and that may not change for some time. But rather than not post it this year, I thought it was just as important to do so – if nothing else, we all have time to plan and tweak for when we can meet and travel once more.
Time for an office facelift…
Kind of. I’ve been at Automattic now for over 3 years and my home office has remained much the same. Thanks to COVID-19 I’m stuck here even more than usual, so I thought it was time to spruce things up a little, clearing down a lot of the clutter and adding new items that will provide to be useful for my day-to-day. Oh, and lots of dusting and general tidying.
And the picture above is the result!
What’s in my bag? 2019 edition
Back in 2017, I revealed, after just a few months working and travelling for Automattic, what I carried with me in my backpack. 2 years on, and many more trips, and that content has changed. I don’t carry everything with me at all times and will modify the bag contents based on where I’m travelling (travel light, you know!).
What has massively changed is the amount of tech I now carry, as I was always lacking a cable or adapter. A much bigger cable organiser bag has allowed me to put all of this in one place but I’ve also taken the opportunity to review what I have and why.
