Swimming achievement unlocked: 38 years in the making!
When I was at school, I was the fat kid who wasn’t particularly good at most sports. However, when I was it was usually overlooked – I was always quick at short distances and loved hurdling, not that anybody would know any of this.
I’d learnt to swim at an early age due to my first primary school having its own pool. An outdoor pool. An unheated outdoor pool. You learnt to move quite quickly in that.
But, by the time I was going at secondary school, they’d given up on me. I was able to do a 50m length and beyond that I didn’t feel I was capable so I remained in the same swimming group. I watched enviously as the best swimmers jumped in to retrieve blocks in their pyjamas and stay behind to attempt to swim a mile, in an empty, calm pool.
I never liked the idea of swimming in pyjamas but swimming a mile (1600 metres, or 32 lengths) seemed such an achievement.

What does the light on the Twelve South AirFly mean?
Twelve South’s AirFly allows you to easily connect your Bluetooth headphones to the in-flight entertainment system on an airplane. Plug the AirFly into the headphone socket on the seat back and enjoy a Bluetooth connection to your headphones of choice!
The instructions provided get you started but are sparse on details of what the various combination of light mean on the device. There are 3 versions of the AirFly available too – AirFly SE, AirFly Pro and AirFly Pro Deluxe – but the light is the same on each.
So, for the curious, here’s what it means…

Don’t be a Dick
Back in 2012 I attended a meetup for bloggers, during which the journalist Stuart Heritage gave an excellent talk about writing. And number 8 on his list of things that he felt were important was, well, what you can see in the image above.
Tongue-in-cheek it may seem but it was important to Stuart and has stayed with me since. In fact, it became an important part of his first book. It’s a modern interpretation of “be excellent to one another”, I guess, but is more realistic – you don’t have to be amazing, just don’t be terrible.
I often think, in whatever I’m doing, “am I being a dick”. Sadly, it’s a mantra that more people should really pick up.
