How to use NirCMD to manage your computer’s power settings

I think we’d all agree that whatever we can to save energy is not only good the environment but also for our pockets. Many of us will their power settings so that the monitor switches off after so long. Of course, you don’t want this to happen just because you’re having a good think about something you’ve been typing, so it likely to be after 10 minutes or more. And that’s not handy if you’re going off for a few minutes to make a cup of tea.

At work, they demand we lock our PCs when we leave (ctrl/alt/delete and then “lock computer”). However, if you set up a screensaver (to go blank, for example) you can set it sign you off – essentially locking the computer.

So, wouldn’t it be much easier to have a big button you can press everytime you leave your desk that would not only lock the computer but turn the monitor off too?

A-ha, and I’m sure you could sense this coming, there is an answer…

    The cycle of life

I used to cycle a lot when I was growing up. However, between the ages of 18 and 31 this pretty much stopped. Mainly due to a lack of a bike (and not being bothered to buy one). Then, 6 years ago, I bought one. And it’s pretty much sat in my shed ever since.

  • Ahhh, memories

    Ahhh, memories

On the subject of downloaded music, I was looking for a copy of the current Doctor Who theme (not that I can find it!) on a (legit) download site, when I came across an album I used to own – Star Wars and other themes by Geoff Love. I was young but, hey, the memories came flooding back. Although not enough to make me stump up £8 for it (mumble, mumble).

That made me remember another album I used to love… Music Time (a rather old Children’s TV show). I found a cover for it but, unfortunately, it would appear to not be available in any format other than to try and find the original vinyl album on eBay.

Ahhh, the power of the internet.

Unfortunately, other powers means that I’m unable to find a copy of the Doctor Who music (without resorting to eMule!). You’d have thought BBC would be trying to milk it for all they could…

  • Google in circles

    Google in circles

Sorry to go on about Google, but I have another head-scratching query.

I did search earlier for a post of mine.. Google found it, but also said:

Did you mean to search for: https://artiss.blog/2008/03/website-performance

Now I knew what would happen if I clicked on this. Sure enough:

    No results found for https://artiss.blog/2008/03/website-performance.

So… so… why suggest to me, when an exact match had been found already, a link that didn’t actually exist?

Worst of all, Google then proceeds to state “However, there are results from websites with similar addresses” and, yes, then lists my original URL.

Does anybody understand this crazy logic?

    Blush

Only just noticed (on a random trawl of the web) that the Guardian did an article about Sky box upgrading and mentioned my website.

Yes, mine. Not anybody else’s. Mine.

    Makes ya proud, it does.

Although I would like to point out that the “huge” 250 GB hard drive upgrade that they mention is, well, nothing. With Copy+ you can put a 1 TB drive in. Oh yes.
