My contribution to WordPress 6.5

I was on vacation last week so wasn’t around for the release of WordPress 6.5.

Look closely at the long list of contributors and you’ll find my name. And, once, once more, my change was related to inclusionary language.

It’s an easy gig, I’ll admit. Changing text in code comments doesn’t require much testing, or even much brain power. The hardest bit is changing language and ensuring the result still makes sense.

This time around, I made a number of changes, specifically targeting the words “stupid” and “lame”, both of which are exclusionary words and have no need to be in use.

This actually spawned others to identify and fix other words, such as the words “dumb” and “crazy”.

This isn’t the end, but just the latest in a round of small but incremental improvements. At some point I need to take the use of the word “normal”, which includes some front-end and more fundamental changes. I’ve had a ticket open for a while to deprecate the use of “normal” as a value for widgets, but that’s gone nowhere. Much more work is needed.

I’d also like to contribute to WordPress someday, but I’ve no idea on how to start 😂.
