If you’re rocking an iPhone and a neat pair of AirPods, one of the cool things is how they automatically connect each time you need to use them. But, sometimes, this appears to go wrong and, suddenly, your AirPods will pretend not to know you. Here I’m going to share a quick fix for this.

Restoring the Side Panel button in Google Chrome
A recent update to Google Chrome has got rid of the side panel button and added a new “pinning” feature instead.
The side panel button opened up the bookmarks sidebar and, from there, you could switch it to one of the other sidebars. In particular, I use the Reading List feature, so this was how I accessed it.
The idea now is that you open whichever sidebar you want and then you can pin it into place – multiple ones if you wish. Google have said, “You can open most side panel features through the Chrome menu”. Which is true. But the reading list is a number of clicks deep, and not obvious as to where it is (Chrome Menu -> Bookmarks and lists -> Reading List -> Show Reading List). I kinda don’t understand why they got rid of the side panel button, but also add in the pinning feature.

Adding Footnotes in the WordPress block editor
One of the reasons why I put my footnotes plugin up for adoption is because the block editor now has basic footnotes built into it. I moved all of my footnotes over to this, disabled my plugin and haven’t looked back since.

Apple automations: Shortcuts vs Focus vs Automations vs Scenes
Yes, if you’re using Apple devices, creating automations is a massive PITA due to the number of competing ways of doing it. Each has its own unique positioning but it’s even worse than that as there are additional methods, such as the Automator app that comes with MacOS.
Here I’m going to compare the 4 methods I’ve mentioned in the title, detailing why you’d use each one. And, inn all cases, the automations that I talk about are available on both Mac and iPhone/iPad.

Ethernet only device? Connect it to Wi-Fi for £20
Under my TV I have a PVR that connects to the internet for various streaming apps. Unfortunately, it only uses Ethernet, with no Wi-Fi capability. Now unless your router is nearby (mine isn’t) or you just happen to have your house all kitted out with Ethernet, then this would be a problem.
I’ll find you 2 solutions, one of which costs only £20.
