How to fix slow Wi-Fi on an Acer Aspire One

A known issue with the AA1 is that the Wi-Fi can be quite slow. This, as it turns out, is due to some overly aggressive power management.

  • Right click on My Computer and select Properties
  • Click on the Hardware tab and then the Device Manager Option
  • Expand the Network Adapters section. You should see an entry for the Atheros adapter. Right click on this and select Properties
  • Click on the Advanced tab
  • In the left hand column click on Power Save Mode and change the option on the side from Maximum to Off.
  • Finally, click OK and close Device Manager.

This is the workaround reported by many users and has certainly worked for me.

This information is not very useful, I don’t see “My Computer” at all on the Acer Apire 1 2011 model. I do see “Computer” I think these instructions need to be re-written.

      Joe,

This was written for the earlier Windows XP version – I assume yours has Windows 7. As I don’t have that version of the netbook I can’t verify whether it has the same problem OR whether the workaround is still correct. Certainly, new hardware and a new OS, if you’re having the same problems then I suspect it’s a totally different problem and solution.

      David.
