My “What’s in my bag” posts were inspired, many years ago, by similar posts written by my CEO, Matt Mullenweg. His were more aspirational, I felt, in terms of the quality and cost of some of the items that he used but, also, we’re all pretty different and so sharing my own, alternative, list was, I thought, a way to broaden the conversation.
Matt last wrote such a post in 2018 but, recently, dropped a brand new one. Once again it’s inspired me.
There are a few thing I noted from Matt’s list…
- I don’t know whether he dislikes Lightning but he’s desperately switching over to USB-C. Mainly because it’s consistent – less cables and adapters needed then.
- All of the remaining cables and small things aren’t bundled into any kind of organiser. I asked him about this and he said, “It’s all kind of floating around, but that’s why I like things with different shapes and textures so I can find it by feel.”
- With a few exceptions, what he’s carrying feels a lot more achievable for the average traveller and, yes, he’s given me quite a few ideas.
Lightning the load
Anyway, the consequence of all of this is that Matt has made re-think my own bag contents. I love taking big, heavy, bags of kit and, you know, I rarely use most of it. So, this year, I’m pairing it down with a separate, optional bag of items for when I need to do any kind of presentation and then need something extra.
Like Matt, I’m also trying to push away from Lightning but, where there’s no reason for me to change, I’m not doing so, so will be keeping some Lighting kit for a time.
My next update.
I haven’t travelled for the last 6 months, so not a huge amount has changed, but am due to again starting in March which, coincidentally, is when my next update is due. With ideas from Matt’s post as well as thoughts for my upcoming travelling, I therefore suspect it will be a little different, with plans already germinating on a broad re-think.
