Back in 2021 I detailed how I cleaned out the PS4 Pro that I’d bought uses and, seemingly, had nothing more than a damp cloth rubbed over it.
14 months later, in 2023, I had to do it again. It seems that replacing thermal paste and pads only has a limited life.
It’s now 3 years later and, recently, I haven’t been playing it anywhere near as much. But I’ve started again and am playing Call of Duty – a game that really pushes the PS4 Pro’s capabilities and will set the fan spinning quite easily. And, once again, it was sounding like a Harrier Jump Jet.
In reality, the fixes I’m doing should last longer, so I’ve done it again but, this time, changed it up a bit.
- Before, I used Thermal Grizzly paste and pads but, this time, I’m using Arctic MS-4 paste and TP-3 pads.
- Instead of just cleaning out the vents, heat sync and fan, I’ve stripped the PS4 completely, cleaning every components and part of it so that it looked new
- The fan, which I identified as the inferior Delta model, simply got replaced for a new one. It isn’t branded as the superior Nidec model but certainly looks like it, and gets good reviews
- My PS4 sits on the wall behind my TV. An inspection showed the back very dusty, so before putting the PS4 back, I cleaned that throughly – now there’s less dust around for it to be sucking in at every opportunity
Everything was put back together and, one database rebuild later, it was up and working. It was now silent – so much so that I worried the fan wasn’t working. Once I had Call of Duty running I could faintly hear it when up close, so knew that was fine. It’s just really, really quiet. Let’s see how long it last this time…
