Fixing a noisy PlayStation 4 Pro: 14 months on

In October 2022 I did a massive clean and made improvements to the thermal capability of my PS4 Pro – the result was something that was much, much quieter.

I haven’t gamed much this year but playing Fortnite recently has been making the Pro run loudly again. For this reason, it’s time to open it up again and see what’s going on.

Shutting it down and taking it off the wall (yes, I have it wall-mounted) the amount of dust in the vents may be the main concern here.

Anyway, I followed the same instructions as before, taking the PS4 totally apart. And… I was right. Most of the issue was the dust in the side vents, making it difficult for the fan to draw in air.

However, I took the opportunity to do something that I didn’t last time, and that’s to change the button battery on the system board – it’s just a CR2032 battery.

One thing to note, is that to take everything apart and get access to things such as the system fan, you have to separate the processor from the heat-sink, requiring more thermal paste to be added (after cleaning up what was there before), so take that into consideration before embarking on this. It took me just over an hour in total but, in future, I suspect that just a clean of the side vents without taking anything apart would be fine.

Once cleaned and re-assembled, the only other thing I did was boot into safe mode and then run a database rebuild.
